Red Fox (male) # 20091008-01F

Picture
One of our supporters called the office early Thursday morning to report the death of a Red Fox. Fortunately, Megan was close by to retrieve the fox before it was completely destroyed by vehicles. This young male red fox was likely on his way back towards the river but was struck by a vehicle and killed along 10th Avenue SW near Bow Trail in Downtown Calgary.

Striped Skunk 20081013-01S

Picture
This skunk was killed by my dog. We were out walking along the river and she caught this little female off guard. Unfortunaltely this litttle skunk was the victim of an under supervised animal my fault entirely thinking that the dog would not pose any threat off lieash in the middle of the bush. When I got to the skunk she was still alive, disemboweled and scared. I sat with her for the few short moments she lived and took these photographs of her last moments.

Kootenay Moose Calf (female) #20080902-01M

This Calf moose was definitely struck by a vehicle at high speed. Both her front and back legs were broken and she likely suffered head and internal injuries as well. She was likely hit at dusk by a large truck or transport. She was found on Highway 93 in Kootenay National Park September 6th 2008 and would have been born in the spring of the same year.

Edgewater Coyote Pup 2 (female) #2008-0717-02C

This was the second coyote puppy that we recovered along highway 95 during the summer of 2008. As you can see in the photographs this pup still has her milk teeth.  90 percent of the deaths of coyotes older than five months are caused by people.

Snowshoe Hare #20080712-01L

Picture
This snowshoe hare was found on the Ravenhead Road just outside of Kootenay National Park. It was likely struck by a vehicle earlier in the day and had not yet been discovered by scavengers. The sex and age of the hare are unknown.

Kindersley Coyote (female) #20080627-01C

This female coyote was struck and killed by a vehicle along Highway 95. Her body was recovered at the government gravel pit near Kindersley Creek. She sustained a bilateral fractures to her hind legs and likely a broken back. She had been observed exactly one week earlier feeding on carrion dumped in the gravel pit. She was in good shape for a young female. She had a healthy body weight and was shedding out her winter coat.  She was likely just over a year old.

Young Magpie #20080607-01B

This young magpie still had its blood feathers present. It was likely struck and killed by a vehicle and then run over by subsequent vehicles. It was found on the C&E trail just west of Red Deer.

Flying Squirrel #20071109-01N

This flying squirrel was found in Brisco. The cause of death was never determined. The animal was found lying on the ground with no apparent injuries.

Brisco Coyote (female) #20050323-01C

This female coyote was struck and killed by a vehicle along highway 95 in Brisco, BC. Her body was still warm when we picked her up off the road. She suffered major head trauma. She still had her winter coat and did not appear to be pregnant.
